J 2011 MEETINGS SCHEDULE

Our next meeting is Saturday, October 15 at LuAnn Lyon's home in Sunrise Skypark.   It is a two-story blue house on the river side of the runway.  We will meet at 10 a.m.  This is actually the third Saturday of the month, but the change was made to accommodate our speaker, Jim Price.  He plans to attend the Balloon Festival in New Mexico, and this date gives him time to get back to Idaho.  Jim set the altitude record in the Long-EZ and is also an excellent photographer.  Attendees can either drive or fly to this meeting.  Call Petra or LuAnn if you plan to attend, or for specific landing/parking instructions.

McCall fly-in

Petra introduced the meeting and updates while we all enjoyed a tasty brunch

sponsored by Beverly Anderson and Christina Chapman. Beverlyʼs home was the

perfect location, set among pines, with view of deer and landing airplanes seen from the

clear zone of RWY 16.

Christina Chapman, M.A  described her latest endeavor unveiled summer 2011: Woman Wise Airmanship Adventure held at Smiley Creek, Id. Topics included: How gender shapes us, stereotypes to strengths, aviation culture, traditional barriers for women, learned helplessness to learned optimism, and female styles of power and leadership dovetailed into new perceptions of success for women aviators,

regardless of their flying goals.  Two sections will be offered next summer at Smiley Creek:

Following the presentation, the meeting came to an abrupt halt when we received news that there were five available seats on a Grumman Goose which was leaving McCall, landing at Cascade Lake, and then returning. Beverly quickly provided straws for the women to draw, but the number of available seats and number of available passengers matched perfectly.  Five 99s had the rare opportunity to fly in Larry Teufelʼs completely restored 1944 stunning Grumman Goose. Mr. Tuefelʼs has flown Grumman Goose for nearly 20 years, of which 17 he flew Jimmy Buffet and taught him to fly it. HE sold his previous piston Goose to Jimmy Buffet and he upgraded to a turbine powered Grumman Goose, one of four in the country. Beverly Anderson and Christina Chapman shared turns flying. Banking turns, climbing, and descending was magnificently easy. Once splashed down on Lake Cascade, pilot, crew, and passengers all climbed out onto the top and bobbed in the lake with huge grins. It was quite an experience and Mr.

Teufel refused any offers to help with fuel. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with the 99ʼs

and was honored to treat us to a flight.  Some pretty awesome pictures have been added to the Photo Gallery of our Web Site.

NWS Section Meeting, Vancouver, BC

Chapter members who attended:  Chairman Petra Vawter, Secretary Pat Jenkins, Mary Ann Richards, Bev LaBrie, and Susan Harper.  There were 36 at the business meeting and about 75 for Saturday Night’s Banquet.  Rosella Bjornson was the keynote speaker.   Her first “official” flying lesson was in 1964.   By 1973, Rosella had 3,500 hours flying time, an Air Transport Rating and a Class I Multi-engine Instrument Rating, and applied to fly with the airlines. She was hired as a First Officer at Transair, the fourth largest airline in Canada. This gave her the distinction of being the first female to be hired as First Officer in North America on scheduled jet equipment, and the first female to be hired by a commercial air line in Canada. She was the first female member of the Canadian Air Line Pilots Association.

Marjy Leggett, outgoing Governor, publicly thanked and praised Wendy Frazer for her work as Nominating Committee Chairman.  I also noticed that Wendy donated a beautiful handmade ceramic bowl for the silent auction.  The fly market was set up right outside the meeting/banquet room.  No doubt that increased sales.

The weather was not cooperative, however, five or six 99s were able to fly to the event.  Oregon Pines Chapter was awarded the Best Web site.  Section Meeting 2012 will be held Aug 23-26 in Walla Walla, Washington.

Help us make The 99s better than ever! It will be available until Sept. 28th.

Member Chat/Miscellaneous Information

Bob and I made a "trip home" to Wichita with the Silver Foxes, a group of retired Beech Aircraft distributors and factory sales folks vintage the sixties and seventies.  Wichita is on the ropes with Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft, Lear, Boeing and the numerous support companies in the survival mode.  Beech is now down to 4,500 employees and we'd heard rumors of building airplanes in Mexico.  The company President Bill Boisture met with us and we were terrifically impressed with him.  There are, indeed, plants in Mexico now where they build the Bonanza and Baron.  The pieces are then shipped to Wichita where they are painted, assembled and delivered. Of course we questioned quality control which was described as Wichita-equal in training and inspection and the FAA is right there also.  It's a survival move - with the cost down there (non union) 20% of what it would be in the US.  Even so, a new Bonanza will set you back just under $800,000.  We also learned that 70% of the production is now delivered off the North American continent - I would guess most of the jets.  We saw a King Air coming off the line going to the Algerian Air Force.

The salvation right now is the T6B which is really like a T34 (Bonanza), tandem with a canopy, turboprop (PT6 engine) built in the Wichita plant. President Boisture said that if we really want to help general aviation and write our congressmen, don't bother talking about airplanes because with the current administration the fat-cat jet owners are the bad guys.  The word is jobs and trade.  Aviation export now has the largest portion of our country's balance of trade.                          Gene Nora
