J 2011 MEETINGS SCHEDULE
UPCOMING EVENTS
The 99s will host breakfast for the ACE academy attendees next Wed. (June 22nd). We will be providing a light breakfast for the attendees, not a lot of help is needed, but if anyone is interested, contact Petra at (208) 861-9766.
June 25th, Caldwell Air Show
The air show is June 25, next weekend. People who want to help me at the Caldwell Air Show please email or call me at 870-2648. If we can get a few people for two hours at a time, that would be great! Thank you, Robbie Chariton RobbieRetirement@aol.com.
July 9th, Garden Valley
I noticed that the 180/185 Club has scheduled their annual fly-in to Garden Valley this weekend. Lots of fun and lots of airplanes. If there is any interest in planning an activity elsewhere, please let Petra know ASAP.
July 29th, International Conference, Oklahoma City
Petra would like to know who might be attending the International Meeting in Oklahoma City from Idaho. We have our own hospitality suite. If you plan to attend, please let Petra know.
August 20, McMinnville, Oregon
Don't forget to mark August 20 on your calendars. Our meeting will be held at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. The museum contains three large buildings: an aviation museum, housing the Spruce Goose, a space museum, and an IMAX theatre where aviation/space movies are shown. This month they are also opening their water park, so this would be a good meeting to include the whole family.

FLYING COMPANION SEMINAR May 12th
Last month's flying companion seminar was a success. It was the perfect outlet for women pilots to express their creative energy in a way that encouraged and educated all who participated. Thank you! Pictures available on our web site Photo Gallery.
Smith Prairie June 11
Saturday's meeting at Smith Prairie was well-attended with ten 99s, two 49.5s, one aeronautics official, and two children who showed surprising skill with shovels. In fact, many wonderful skills were demonstrated, including lighting fuses, hanging windsocks, changing tires (wow, Melissa!), and delivering potato chips. Lots of unidentifiable parts were picked up off the runway, and it was conjectured that we probably had enough parts to build an airplane, or a snowmobile. We were able to enjoy lunch and beautiful scenery on the back patio at the store. Brenda Carter was presented with the book, "The Airman's World," as a small token of our huge appreciation for her work as chairman.
The Homedale airport Re-paint event on June 17th was a huge success. There was quite a crowd which made the project take only a few hours. Beth reports that Aubree, Tawni , Petra & Russ (and three kids: Matthew, Hanna, & Naomi), Luann Lyons, Bev LaBrie, Robbie & Jim Charlton, and Beth were there, raring to go. Instead of having to use brooms to sweep off the old, chipped paint, they had help when someone with a sweeper on their truck cleared the way for them. In no time the job was done. And to top off the day, they had lunch at the Bowling Alley which was picked up by the Airport Manager. Pictures to follow.
J NWS Meeting news
The West Canada 99s has established a web site for this year’s Section Meeting. It includes the registration form, information for your hotel stay, and the schedule. The first cutoff date for registration is July 1st. Make it easy on yourself and send your registration form and check to Nancy Jenson. She will consolidate and send one check after each cutoff date. You don’t have to worry about the conversion rate from CAD to USD, as the Greater Seattle 99s will make up any difference required. The information and form was sent out separately from the newsletter to all Idaho Chapter Members. That information and more is now available on www.westcan99s.com.

The deadline for updates to information to be included in the 2011-2012 Directory is July 1, 2011. Please send to Headquarters prior to that date.
Forms for updates to Chapters and Sections are available in the Library section of the Members Area of the website and are included with this Dispatch. Personal information may be updated using the Update section of the Members Area of the website. Also, you may call Headquarters at any time.
The information on the proposed Bylaw/Standing Rules amendments that will be voted on at the Conference in Oklahoma City, is available on The 99s website. Log on to the Members Area. Then go to the Library section. Scroll down to the fifth item under Forms, Lists and Guides. Please be sure someone either in your Chapter or Section has your delegate slips to take to Oklahoma City.
Own a piece of The 99s Compass Rose at International Headquarters in Oklahoma City. Tiles are available in all four price categories; however the gold tiles at $299 each are selling out quickly. Blue and grey tiles are available at $199, white at $99 and slivers at $49.50. Buy one for yourself and make a gift of a tile to “the person who has everything.” To view the schematics and place your order go to http://www.ninety-nines.org and under Featured Links on the lower right, click on Own a piece of the Compass Rose. Then come to Oklahoma City this year for the annual Conference and see this beautiful tribute to all Ninety-Nines.

From Brenda Carter: I wanted to thank everyone one for the wonderful book, "The Airman's World" by Gill Robb Wilson, that I received as outgoing chair. I love old books and this looks like a great read as well. I have enjoyed being chair. This is a fantastic group to know. It is by far the hardest working chapter around. Thank you again for all of your work and making our chapter fun. BJ
*Here is an interesting story & events of Test Flying as told by a Lady Test Pilot Hanna Reitsch for the German Luftwaffe before and during WW II. It's in three parts.

*BJ shared an idea with Sherry Kandle. She suggested an article in the newsletter every month about one of our members. It seems like we never have enough time at meetings to get to know everyone. Sherry is approaching two years in this group, and just beginning to learn about all the amazing women. No more hiding! Get your bio's polished up!
Sherry is starting off this month by introducing our newest 99, Melissa Kaplan Melissa joined in May, and says she should have joined years ago when she was attending Embry-Riddle. Melissa obtained her ratings several years ago (sound familiar?) She has spent the last few years raising her children to school age and now with more free time, she is looking forward to getting to know some 99s and volunteering where ever she is needed. She recently applied for membership in the Ponderosa Aero club so should be getting back to flying soon. You may have met Melissa when she stopped in to visit us during the FCS in May. Please welcome Melissa to our group. And if you need any help with 99 activities or just to hang out at the airport, please contact her. She has a ton of energy and enthusiasm!
So here's Melissa:
“I began my flight training out of Caldwell, ID in 1996 where I completed my Private Pilot certificate before going to college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ. In the spring of 2001 I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Studies and Minors in Aeronautical Science, Aviation Safety, and Humanities. By the time I graduated I had completed my ratings and certificates to include Commercial Single- Multi- Engine Land and Instrument rating. At graduation I was awarded a plaque for "Most Outstanding Student" in my degree program. Since graduating my husband and I have moved from Arizona, to Alaska, Chicago, Minnesota and South Dakota before finally settling down in Boise, Id about 6 years ago. During that time I became a mother of 2 and put my career on hold. Now that my kids are entering the full day school system I feel it is time for me to start focusing on my goals and interests that have been put on hold for so long. I'm anxious to get involved with the aviation community again and am thrilled to have found such a nice receiving bunch of gals in the Idaho Chapter of the 99s. I'm also excited to say that I have joined Ponderosa Aero Club and take my first flight in over 2 years on Wednesday June 15th when I hope to satisfactorily complete a BFR and aircraft checkout. It's been difficult work knocking the rust off but the shine is soon to return. Eventually I am hoping to land a job working in the field of aviation in some way whether in the air or on the ground. However, if a dream job isn't in my cards I'll be happy hanging out at the Aero Club or with my new friends I've found in the 99s.”
-Melissa
*It's almost time for the air race so of course we had to polish up the airplane and made a party of it. We've had fun with the Carter/Patrick photo. He was on his back installing a radio and we thought we were going to have to call a crane to get him out! The short people did well waxing the belly and of course loved the crawler. Gene Nora and BJ (Brenda) bought the Musketeer airplane together and BJ hasn't ever raced so will be a passenger, but really a big help with another pair of eyes watching for traffic (50 airplanes in the race) and on the computer. Patty Pilot the navigator and I have flown a half dozen races together - she's a retired 747 pilot for United. We're especially tickled to have drawn race #2 so will help lead the pack out of the starting gate, and of course are calling our team The Three Musketeers. We'll leave home Thursday for Iowa City, though the race doesn't start until the 21st after all the preliminaries. The route is: Iowa City to Brookings, SD, Jamestown, ND, Spearfish, SD, Rawlins, WY, Alliance, NE, Great Bend, KS, Borger, TX, Norman, OK, El Dorado, AR, Mobile, AL the finish - 2,722 statute miles. We have 4 days to finish the full throttle race after timing at each stop and will play the winds so have no idea which day we will be at which stop. Otherwise, we'd like to see some of you along the way, but don't know if we'll land at each timing stop since if we've got a good tailwind and enough fuel we'll time by and go on. We'll wave as we go over! Gene Nora Pictures of the “polish party” available in the Photo Gallery on our web site.
